Welcome to Phonics at Sacred Heart

At Sacred Heart we are commited to nurturing a love for reading and equipping every child with the phonics skills needed for future success.  We teach phonics using the Little Wandle phonics programme. The Little Wandle program ensures our children develop strong foundational skills in reading and spelling.

Reception.

In Reception children start with Phase 2 phonics learning essential letter sounds and working on oral blending and blending skills.  During the spring term they advance through Phase 3 introducing digraphs and trigraphs.  In our summer term the children start Phase 4 which fouccses on blending longer words and consolidating their learning.

Year One.

When the children start Year One they foucs on consolidating their learning from Reception.  In our autumn term the children will be introduced to Phase 5 phonics which helps them to 'grow the code' and broadens their reading fluency.  This helps the children prepare for the Phonics Screening Check that takes place in the summer term.

Rapid Catch Up.

For children who did not pass their Phonics Screening Check they will take part in our daily Rapid Catch Up.  This ensures that every child has the tools they need to become confident readers.

Reading.

Each week your child will bring home their guided reading book that they have been reading at school.  Your child will have read this book at school and might find it easy.  This is okay as it is helping your child read with fluency.  We encourage parents to read with their child at least three times a week and sign their reading record.  Your child will also bring a reading for pleasure book.  In order for your child to develop a love of reading it is important that they have a reading for pleasure book.  This book is for you and your child to enjoy together.   This book gives you and your child an opportunity to look at the pictures, enjoy putting on different voices for the characters and discuss your favourite momemnts from the book.

Homework.

Every child in Reception and Year One will receive weekly homework based on their learning that has taken place in class that week.  This gives families the opportunity to support their child's phonics journey at home.  We also ask that parents read with their child at least 3 times a week.
