Curriculum Roots
The Sacred Heart Curriculum is designed with our pupils at the centre.
Unique to our school are our six curriculum roots; belonging, freedom, courage, curiosity, responsibility and aspiration. These six values inform and direct how we deliver the curriculum subjects in ways that are meaningful to our pupils, their lives and the community in which our school serves.
Our curriculum roots are progressive year on year, engaging pupils in open questioning at an appropriate level for them. Our intent is for our curriculum to give children the knowledge and skills within school with the practical know how of how to associate these things beyond school and for the benefit of all. In the words of Rob Carpenter, ‘We need to help children meet the world and not be at the centre of it’.
Through exploring and delivering these 6 roots we will see children who:
- Have a sound sense of where they belong and what it means to include and involve others
- By staying positive in school and in our lives, we can turn challenges into opportunities and inspire others with our kindness and determination.
- Act courageously for themselves and others
- Are curious about the breadth of knowledge and opportunity that the world holds for them
- Know and act upon their own responsibilities to themselves, their communities and the planet
- Aspire to be the best version of themselves and to recognise and act upon their innate potential
The National Curriculum 2014 serves as the guiding document for the knowledge and skills taught, yet the outworking of these is engineered to best engage, inspire and accelerate the progress of the children within our schools demographic context.
