Year 1 Homework
This year, we have decided to change what homework looks like in Year 1. Instead of written homework, the homework we will be giving will be ongoing and specific to each child with a focus on reading, phonics and spelling.
Sound rings
Your child has their own sound ring set, the sounds on their ring are specific to the phase that your child is working at and new sounds will be added weekly. Please use these sounds to help your child with their phonics and you will find fun ideas for games that you can play on the ring as well. If you are unsure how to say any of the sounds please feel free to ask and you may also want to look at the video on the school website where Mrs Warrell does a demonstration for you. Please ensure that your child’s sound ring is in their bag each day as we will need them in school so that we can add on any new sounds as we go. We will also use these sound rings within your child’s phonics lesson.
Tricky word packs
Before the summer break, we assessed the tricky words that every child was able to read and spell. We have put together packs of words specific to your child including common exception words that they need to know by the end of the year. These are for you to practice and work on with your child. When you feel your child can both read and spell the words, the pack can be brought back to school where we will check if they are secure and give them the next set of words to work on. We will try our best to assess the children as quickly as we can when you send their flashcards in but we cannot always promise this will be on the same day.
Phonics packs (These will be sent in the next couple of weeks)
As phonics is an important part of your child’s ability to read, we will be sending home phonic games for you to play with your child. When you have completed the game or task please send a picture or video to me on seesaw so that I know the activity has been completed. Please return these to me on a Wednesday so I can give your child a new pack on a Friday. We have thought carefully about trying to resource fun and engaging games that the children will enjoy at home, we would really appreciate if you can ensure each pack is returned with all of the pieces, objects or instructions that it has in it when it comes home with you.
